What to Expect with a Facelift

What to Expect with a Facelift

Each facelift is unique and designed to specifically meet the particular needs of every patient. The results of the facelift procedure vary from patient to patient. Your plastic surgeon can give you an idea of what your results will be and he can show you before and after facelift photos of patients who are similar to you in facial structure and goals. The photos will help give you an idea of the results you can expect.

What you Can Expect in Your Facelift Consultation
In your facelift consultation with your plastic surgeon, you can ask all of your facelift questions, discuss the results you wish to achieve, and go over the pre- and post-operative instructions. Your plastic surgeon will answer all of your questions and address any of your concerns. Your surgeon will describe the facelift procedure and give you the information you need so you know what to expect before, during, and after your facelift procedure.

What to Expect Before Your Facelift
Your plastic surgeon will give you instructions on how to prepare for your facelift. Depending on what medications you are taking, you may need to alter how you take your prescription medications. It is important to tell your surgeon about all medications and supplements you are taking because they may negatively interfere with the facelift procedure.
Your plastic surgeon will suggest that you stop smoking at least four weeks before your procedure if you are a smoker. Smoking negatively interferes with the facelift procedure because it inhibits the flow of blood through your skin. Smoking can also negatively affect the healing process. It is a good idea to avoid smoking for a few weeks following your procedure to maximize the healing process.
Arrange for a family member or a friend to take you to and from the surgery center. You will not be able to drive yourself. Your family member or friend will be needed to help you during the first few days after your procedure while you recover.

What to Expect Following your Facelift
Plan on spending the first few days in bed to rest and recover. You will experience swelling on your face and around your head. To help reduce swelling, you can apply cold compresses to your face and lay with your head elevated above your chest. You may also experience some discomfort. Most patients use over the counter pain medications to manage discomfort. Notify your surgeon if you experience discomfort or pain that is unmanageable. He will prescribe pain medications to help with your comfort level.
Dressings are removed after the first or second day following the procedure. Sutures are typically removed five to ten days after your facelift. Avoid physical activity and long exposure in the sun for the first couple weeks during your recovery. Your plastic surgeon will give you further instructions on post-operative care.
